monk unhanded combat
I was just wondering dose a monk get to fight unhanded at all or do have to use a staff all the time. would think a monk or any class would have some kind of unarmed skills, such as punch and kicks..

Haha! Unhanded.
Monks are casters, they use smiting spells to do damage. Unless you pick up warrior or ranger as secondary and focus on those weapon skills. There is no unarmed fighting in the game. |

You're thinking of the wrong kind of monk.

Have you played EQ1? Monks in that game got bonuses to unarmed fighting and they could do roundhouse kicks and other moves.

There are the Buddhist monks which sometimes practice martial arts, that is what you are thinking of. The actual word monk is just somebody who is devoted to a discipline prescribed by his order. In this game the monks are the religous class, they recieve their power from the gods.

I've played a monk in EQ1, AO, EQ2, CoH, SWG, and I would have played one in WoW if they had the class. At first I was disappointed that monks were not fighters like they had been in the other games, but healers, but I decided to try it anyways and surprisingly I'm enjoying it. Give it a chance.

Yes, generally most monks are just considered devout religous types.. but there are certainly a few orders that use martial arts, usually for the sheer sake of discipline(Self-discipline, that is.). The most notable of these are probably the Shaolin Monks.

I agree that monks are not made for combat in this game. However I think it is strange that they made them seem so martial-artsy without tossing them some kind of bone for melee fighting. Their /dance emote looks so cool, it's too bad they have nothing to back it up with.

True, the kind of monks the game portrays them out to be versus the kind of monks they really are is contraversial. They look like the kind of monks that could catch an arrow- but they really are the kind of monks that you'd see in a monastary in a brown robe where the most action in his schedual is tending the garden or drinkng a glass of holy water (they could possibly catch an arrow as well, but maybe with their face or chest). Maybe they wanted the tougher look without the bark. :P
